Pearl City is a CDP and unincorporated community in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is in the Ewa District of Honolulu on the island of O’ahu located along the northern edge of Pearl Harbor. It is a medium-sized coastal community and the armed forces are a huge factor in the communities life and atmosphere. Over 6% of the local workforce is connected to the armed forces. Being coastal it is a nautical community with a rich history tied to the ocean. It also features gorgeous waterfront scenery and wonderful beach and water activities. Over 28% of all adults in Pearl City have a four-year degree or more, which is well above the national education average for U.S. communities. It is extremely diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, religion and more. English is the primary written and spoken language within the CDP, followed by Pacific Island Languages and Japanese.
In its early history, the area was dotted with rice paddies and fields and agriculture was the main industry. In the 1800s, focus began to shift away from agriculture and the area became the final stop on Benjamin Dillinghams railroad. Once the railway was completed lots for homes went on sale before a community was even established. Entertainment and recreation has long been an important factor and economic focus in the community. An early example of this was Redmond Grove, where visitors could listen to various musical performances involving pianos, trumpets, saxophones, and banjos. Over the years, the CDP has been home to several notable people like Governor David Ige, actor Jason Scott Lee and Brooke Lee who became Miss Hawaii in 1997 and went on to become Miss USA and Miss Universe the same year. Today, Pearl City is a thriving community with sand, sun, family-friendly neighborhoods and quiet streets.
The CDP spans 5.8 square miles, five square miles of land and .08 square miles of water. It is a wealthy community in comparison to state economic standards and upper-middle income compared to national figures. In 2010, the population of Pearl City was 47,698 and the population density was 6,215 people per square mile. In 2016, the estimated median household income was $93,200 and the estimated per capita income was $34,129. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in the CDP was $662,836, the mean price on all housing units was $709,424 and the median gross rent was $1,890.
Public education for the youth of Pearl City is supervised by the Hawaii Department of Education. All students attend classes either in the CDP of Pearl City or in the neighboring CDP of Waimalu. There are four elementary schools and one Intermediate school in Pearl City and two elementary schools and a high school in Waimalu. Average commute time for residents of Pearl City is approximately 31-32 minutes. However, public transportation is available in the form of bus services that many people use for their daily commutes.
